  • Coming in 2017: New Student Life and Performance Center at NEC

Submitted by Alexandra on March 4, 2015

After six years of planning, the New England Conservatory (NEC) Board passed a vote to begin construction of its new Student Life and Performance Center, scheduled to break ground on May 5, 2015.  It will be the first new construction project at the Conservatory in over almost 50 years.   The building has been designed by Ann Beha Architects and Gensler Boston, and will be constructed by Tishman Construction.

Among many beneficial features, including new performance spaces and a dining commons.  the new building would also include a new two-level Library, enabling their long-separated audio resources and printed materials to be housed in one location.

NEC Library Director, Alan Karass adds: “The new Student Life and Performance Center, including the new library, will be an important addition to the NEC campus. Not only will the new library bring together all of the Conservatory’s collections, it will also include ample seating and spaces designed for collaborative learning.”

The Student Life and Performance Center is due to open in 2017, in time for the Conservatory’s 150th anniversary.  Read more about the project here.
